BenefitPort was formed as BLC Holdings LLC in May 1999 with the financial support of The Trident Partnership, a limited partnership which committed $60 million to the Company's initial financing.
The Trident Partnership L.P., formed in 1994 by advisors Marsh & McLennan Capital, Inc. and J.P. Morgan, invests in global insurance, reinsurance, and related industries, including leading Internet insurance technology firms. The initial $60 million investment was structured as convertible preferred debt.
In the course of its first year of operations the founding management team identified and subsequently acquired the following general agencies and insurance software firms:

- Association Plan Concepts - Delaware
- Agents' Umbrella Group - Florida
- Associated Group Brokerage - Texas
- Computer Software Group - New York
- Medical Data Interchange - Connecticut
